Introduction:

Collaborations with Future and Metro Boomin have always occupied a middle ground between lighthearted and menacing. Seeing them both continuously work that connection since their debut collaboration on 2013's "Honest" has produced some of the most exciting rap high-wire performances of the past ten years ("Mask Off," in particular, is still guaranteed to have people dancing). The fact that Future and Metro haven't collaborated on a full-length album yet makes this week's “We Don't Trust You”, a historic occasion. And "Like That," the sixth tune, is currently the center of attention.

Kendricks Standout Verse:

After years of subliminals, guest Kendrick Lamar delivers the song's stunning moment, abandoning the therapeutic gloom of his last album in favor of taking aim at peers J. Cole and Drake. Although the three are frequently regarded as the big dogs of contemporary rap, Kendrick asserts his superiority with a furious stanza. He yells, "Fuck sneak dissin', first person shooter/I hope they came with three switches," alluding to Cole and Drake's recent hit "First Person Shooter." Then, he cleverly and savagely mocks Drake's reputation as a Michael Jackson-level celebrity by making a reference to Jackson's feud with another music legend.

Elements of the Cinematic Remix:

In this post, we honour the new track “Like That”, released by the Freebands affiliates. Keeping with my consistent style of cinematic remixes, I decided to turn this track into a movie soundtrack.

When I first heard the the menacing synth at the beginning of the track, I though to myself, “Man that would sound good on violin”. Turns out - not only did it sound good, it works perfectly with the grand sound of a full orchestra. The baseline and piano melody lend itself well to violin as well, and in this video you’ll see how each of these layers sets me up well to introduce one element at a time. Lastly, in my familiar style, all the elements come together to create a grand symphony for the chorus.
